As the name indicates, the proteins are separated in two directions which are orthogonal to each other, based on two properties of the proteins such as the isoelectric point and molecular weight. proteomics aims to measure the abundance of protein expression by comparing control and experimental samples. This classical proteomics approach utilizes gel-based two-dimensional electrophoresis (2-DE) and analytical mass spectrometry (MS) techniques, and present a very strong platform for the analysis and identification of proteins; however, Proteomics A biotechnology branch concerned with applying the techniques of molecular biology, biochemistry, and genetics to analyzing the structure, function, and interactions of the proteins produced by the genes of a particular cell, tissue, or organism, with organizing the information in databases. Real functional molecules of the cell. 2010-05-05 The basic techniques used to analyze proteins are mass spectrometry, x-ray crystallography, NMR, and protein microarrays.

Proteomics is the large-scale study of proteomes. A proteome is a set of proteins produced in an organism, system, or biological context. We may refer to, for instance, the proteome of a species (for example, Homo sapiens) or an organ (for example, the liver). The proteome is not constant; it differs from cell to cell and changes over time.

The migration of proteins can depend on their net charge and on the size of the protein molecule. When these migrations are in two dimensions, as in 2-D polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis, thousands of proteins can be distinguished in a single experiment. information with high-through put techniques gaining enormous attention.

This Preface introduces the articles of the special issue on ‘Proteomics’ where we survey these powerful techniques specifically in the context of applications in neurosciences. Proteomics as used here is a catch‐all term for approaches where a broad survey of all protein content of a cell or tissue is performed in parallel.

Proteomics and genomics are syner-getic (Fig.1). The historical perspective of proteome analysis comes from protein characterisation methods [2–5]. A powerful set of protein analytical tools was developed over the years. Techniques became available to separate thousands Proteomics' main techniques, such as 2D PAGE and X-ray crystallography, are complex and require highly skilled operators.
